  • A. Arokia Rahul (31), a fisherman from Anthoniyarpuram

Both men have been working as fishermen for nearly a decade and were familiar with deep-sea navigation routes between India and Sri Lanka.

How the Smuggling Plan Was Uncovered – 110 Kg Ganja Smuggling Case

According to police officials, the accused were contacted by Stephen Raj (52), a relative of Rahul, who allegedly coordinated the operation. The ganja consignment was reportedly handed over to the fishermen near Athipattinam cremation road, packed inside three white bags.

The drugs were loaded onto a fiber fishing boat, and the duo set out into the sea using GPS navigation to reach a pre-decided location where the contraband was to be handed over to a Sri Lankan contact.

Operation Failed at Sea

Police said the fishermen waited at the designated maritime point for several hours. When the Sri Lankan receiver failed to arrive even by 2:15 a.m., the accused abandoned the plan and returned to the Indian coast, docking near Anthoniyarpuram harbour.

Police Action and Seizure

The operation came to light after a newly transferred coastal police constable, Thiyarajeswaran, identified suspicious movements linked to one of the accused. Based on surveillance and interrogation, police seized the fishing boat and recovered 110 kg of ganja from it.

A mobile phone seized from Rahul revealed audio messages and communication records with overseas contacts, strengthening the case against the accused.

Legal Action

Both fishermen were arrested under provisions of the NDPS Act and remanded to judicial custody. The police have launched a wider investigation to identify:

  • The source of the ganja
  • Other local handlers
  • Possible international drug trafficking links

Authorities stated that coastal surveillance has been intensified to prevent similar smuggling attempts.

Police Statement – 110 Kg Ganja Smuggling Case

Senior officials said the arrest highlights how drug syndicates are increasingly exploiting traditional fishing routes for cross-border trafficking. They warned fishermen against participating in illegal activities, stating that strict action would be taken regardless of occupation.
