A major explosion near the historic Red Fort in Delhi on Monday evening claimed at least eight lives and left over two dozen injured. The blast occurred around 6:52 PM in a slow-moving vehicle near the Red Fort traffic signal, according to Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha.
Delhi Police Confirms Deaths and Injuries
Speaking to the media at the site, Commissioner Golcha said, “There was a blast in a slow-moving vehicle near Red Fort. Several passengers were inside the vehicle when it exploded.” He confirmed that multiple vehicles were damaged, and several victims were rushed to LNJP Hospital for treatment.
Amit Shah Briefed; Investigation Underway
Golcha added that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is being updated regularly about the situation. “All agencies, including Delhi Police, the forensic team, National Investigation Agency (NIA), and the National Security Guard (NSG), are taking stock of the scene,” he stated.
Blast Under Investigation by Multiple Agencies
The cause of the explosion is yet to be confirmed, but preliminary reports indicate a high-intensity device may have been used. Forensic experts are examining debris from the vehicle to determine the source of the blast.
Crowded Evening Turns Chaotic
The incident occurred during the busy evening hours near the Red Fort Metro Station, when the area was packed with commuters and vendors. Witnesses described scenes of panic as flames engulfed nearby vehicles following the explosion.
Massive Blast Near Red Fort 24 Injured, Several in Critical Condition
Officials said 24 people sustained injuries, several of whom are in critical condition. Emergency services and law enforcement agencies cordoned off the area immediately, and an intensive investigation is ongoing to rule out the possibility of a terror attack.
