In a remarkable medical feat at SMS Hospital, Jaipur in Jaipur, a multidisciplinary team of surgeons removed a massive solitary fibrous tumour from just behind a 44-year-old farmer’s lung. The patient had been suffering with shortness of breath, chest heaviness and pain for several months, and after unsuccessful attempts at other hospitals, he found hope here.
The Challenge:
The tumour was located close to the right lung, adhering to the lung surface and situated deep within the chest cavity. Its size was enormous — measuring about 15 × 16 cm and weighing roughly 6 kg.
Because it was stuck to lung tissue, removing it in one piece posed a significant surgical risk. Many other hospitals had refused the case.
The Operation:
The patient was admitted on 27 October and surgeons decided on an immediate operative plan. Under the leadership of Dr. Diksha Mehta and a team of general surgery and anaesthesia specialists, they opened the chest via a 15 cm incision. The tumour was successfully extracted in one single piece after approximately 3.5 hours of surgery.
Outcome & Significance:
Post-surgery, the patient is stable and recovering. This operation is being hailed as a milestone for the hospital — exemplifying excellence in coordination, skill and timely intervention. The team also cautions patients: early diagnosis is crucial, because such tumours grow slowly and may eventually transform if left undetected.
Why This Matters:
It highlights the importance of specialist intervention and a coordinated surgical team for high-risk chest operations.
It underscores the need for patients to seek timely medical attention even when symptoms seem mild, like chest heaviness or breathing difficulty.
It serves as an encouragement that even in complex cases previously deemed inoperable, medical teams with courage and expertise can succeed.
