The Sri Lanka cricket team’s tour of Pakistan has hit a major setback after 16 players decided to withdraw from the ODI series following a suicide blast in Islamabad that killed at least 12 people.
The explosion occurred just a few kilometers from Rawalpindi Stadium, where the Sri Lankan team was staying. Fearing for their safety, several players asked the Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) to send them home.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) responded by increasing security around the team and confirmed that the series will continue under strict protection. However, concerns remain after the 2009 Lahore attack, when Sri Lankan players were previously targeted.
Officials from both sides are discussing future safety arrangements, while fans worldwide express disappointment and concern for player welfare.
